PAPAW
While “papaw” might sound like it belongs to the custard apple family, it’s worth noting that “papaw” is often used interchangeably with “papaya.” However, the papaya (Carica papaya) is not a member of the custard apple family (Annonaceae).
Custard apple, on the other hand, refers to a different group of fruits within the Annonaceae family. Some examples of fruits in the custard apple family include:
- Cherimoya (Annona cherimola): Also known as custard apple, this fruit has creamy, white flesh and a sweet flavor.
- Sugar Apple (Annona squamosa): Another member of the custard apple family, the sugar apple has a scaly skin and sweet, custard-like flesh.
- Atemoya (Annona squamosa x Annona cherimola): This is a hybrid between the sugar apple and cherimoya, combining characteristics of both.
So, while “papaw” may refer to papaya, it’s not part of the custard apple family.
